Courtroom decisions can affect peoples’ destinies in profound and lasting ways. At the same time, it can be difficult for judges, mediators, and juries to sift through and absorb relevant information to reach intelligent opinions during legal proceedings. Courtroom decisions can affect peoples’ destinies in profound and lasting ways. During trials, arbitrations, and mediations, participants are expected to assimilate volumes of information contained in everything from faxes and e-mail to photos and videos. They also must grasp complex concepts quickly. Considering the proliferation of media and complexity of trial information, the nature of how evidence is presented is changing rapidly. The right application of technology enables successful law firms to prepare stronger cases faster and with fewer support staff. Relevant case documents and data can be easily found in seconds. Electronic comments can be added to documents without affecting the original. Attorneys and paralegals can highlight interesting case information and add electronic notes in PDF.

Using these benefits small and mid-sized firms can compete on level ground with larger firms in that they do not have to continually reallocate or hire temporary staff to accommodate changing case loads. Case preparation time is significantly reduced and the accuracy of discovery greatly enhanced.

Do not be misled. The PDF file format is a standard as published by the ISO (32000-1-2008). It specifies a digital form for representing electronic documents to enable users to exchange and view electronic documents independent of the environment in which they were created or the environment in which they are viewed or printed. It is intended for the developer of software that creates PDF files (conforming writers), software that reads existing PDF files and interprets their contents for display and interaction (conforming readers) and PDF products that read and/or write PDF files for a variety of other purposes (conforming products).

PDF versions - The Adobe PDF format is 12 years old. The first version, 1.0, was introduced in 1993. Subsequent releases have added new functionality to the specification, and Adobe’s flagship products — Adobe Acrobat® and Adobe Reader® software — have progressed accordingly.
